FAQs

White fillings frequently asked questions

Have questions about white fillings? We're here to help.

What are white fillings made of?

White fillings, also known as composite fillings, are made from a mixture of plastic and glass materials. This composite resin is tooth-coloured and can be shaded to match the natural colour of your teeth.

How long do white fillings last?

The lifespan of white fillings can vary depending on factors like the size of the filling, the location in the mouth, and your oral hygiene habits. On average, they can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years or more with proper care.

Do white fillings stain or discolour over time?

White fillings are more stain-resistant than they used to be, but they may still become discoloured over time, especially if you consume staining substances like coffee, tea, or tobacco. Regular dental cleanings can help maintain their appearance.

Are white fillings as durable as silver amalgam fillings?

White fillings are durable and suitable for most cavities. However, silver amalgam fillings are still considered more durable for very large or heavily stressed teeth. Your dentist can recommend the best type of filling based on your specific needs.

Do white fillings hurt?

The process of getting white fillings typically doesn’t cause pain. We use local anaesthesia to numb the area before the procedure to ensure you don’t feel any discomfort.

How long does it take to get a white filling?

The time it takes to get a white filling depends on the size and location of the cavity. In most cases, it can be completed in a single dental appointment, typically within 30 minutes to an hour.
