Inlays And Onlays

What are inlays and onlays?

Inlays and onlays (also known as indirect fillings) can be used to restore areas of decay or damage that are too extensive to be treated with a normal filling and can provide a less invasive, more affordable alternative to a crown. They’re a long-lasting restorative solution, that are usually placed in teeth at the back of the mouth or they can be used to repair large areas on the front teeth.

If you have a tooth with a cavity or damage, inlays and onlays can help to restore your tooth’s functionality and appearance, while preserving as much of your natural tooth as possible.

How Treatment Works

Your inlay and onlay journey

    Step 1

The first step is booking an exam. This will involve a thorough examination of your teeth and oral health. Your dentist will then assess the extent of the decay and based on the diagnosis, will determine whether an inlay or onlay is the appropriate treatment option.

  • Step 2

Before placing an inlay or onlay, the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth needs to be removed, the tooth is reshaped to create a stable and clean surface for the restoration.

  • Step 3

After the tooth preparation, an impression of the tooth is taken using our 3D digital scanner. The impression is used to create the inlay or onlay, using our in house CEREC machine.

  • Step 4

Once the inlay or onlay is ready, you'll return to us for the final placement. Your dentist will ensure that the restoration fits properly and matches your natural tooth colour.
